Conquer The Crown in New Zealand with Mad Mike Whiddett

Will New Zealand drift king ‘Mad Mike’ Whiddett Conquer The Crown? Well he has done it. Mad Mike drifted the Crown Range road between Queenstown and Wanaka! This piece of road is 6.5 miles (10.4km) long, with 47 corners, beautiful scenery and some frighteningly dangerous corners, big rocks and big drops and speeds of up to 145mph (232kph). No room for error then….

The main road was closed for this amazing drift run. Mad Mike used a `Red Bull` Mazda FD RX7, with a Normally Aspirated (Non turbo) 26b 4rotor engine, which is basically 2 Wankel Rotary engines bolted together. This screaming, flaming drift beast produces 514hp at the wheels!!

Is New Zealand a bit of a driver’s paradise?
New Zealand is paradise! Being able to shut down a main road in the CBD of Auckland city for a HUGE drift event [Driftshifters], being able to close off main roads all day to make an epic three minute video clip are only a couple of examples of how awesome our councils are.

But as for driver’s paradise, you will commonly hear even the WRC drivers compliment and rate New Zealand as their personal favourite of the world series. Our roads wind through rolling lush green hills, twist over snow peaked and forested mountains, stretch long fields together and have a very unique off camber flow.

This video was amazing, with great editing and visuals. One of the greatest drifting videos I have seen but a little short. Let me know what you think in the comments and if you have driven on this road before, would love to hear more about it or send me some pic`s…..
